Pentek RTS Real-Time Recording Systems: Flexible and Deployable Solutions
|
|
Out of the box, all RTS systems arrive as complete instruments with a full-featured virtual operator control panel ready for immediate data recording and/or playback operation. Because they consist of modular COTS board-level products and flexible control software, they are easily scalable to larger multichannel data acquisition and recording applications.

Critical Techniques for High-Speed A/D Converters In Real-Time Systems Handbook
Written by Rodger Hosking, Vice President and Co-founder of Pentek
Markets for high-speed A/D converters are significant in size and many are growing rapidly. New markets emerge regularly based on A/D technology advances, lower costs, and the general trend of replacing older mechanical and analog systems with DSP (digital signal processing) systems.
Commercial, industrial and government users of high-speed A/Ds include wireless mobile communication systems, airline radar systems, medical imaging systems, communications countermeasure systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, intelligence gathering systems and wireless networks for home, office and public facilities.

Ready-to-Run Recording Systems
The RTS offerings are complete, fully integrated systems featuring a range of A/D and D/A resources with high-speed disk arrays.
All RTS systems are fully programmable and offer the flexibility of FPGA technology for addressing high-bandwidth data recording and playback applications such as radar, direction finding, SIGINT, telemetry and commercial wireless.
Each RTS Real-Time Recording System is a tested, configured system consisting of a host computer, enclosure, processing boards, I/O modules, cabling, media storage devices and documentation. The modular architecture not only ensures flexibility to cover different numbers of channels, it also facilitates performance upgrades as new modules with the latest technology devices become available.
RTS Systems Include:
- Installation of the purchased hardware within a VMEbus or rackmount PC enclosure
- Fabrication, installation and test of custom interconnecting cables
- Installation and test of Pentek software, including ReadyFlow and SystemFlow
- Installation and test of any third-party software purchased through Pentek
- Installation of any custom software developed specifically for your RTS system
- Functional test of the entire system
- System documentation package
RTS Systems Benefits:
- RTS systems are economical alternatives to in-house development
- You can start using the system immediately as a recording and playback instrument
- You can start developing custom applications immediately
- All necessary cables are included, installed and tested
- All necessary jumpers and configuration switches are installed and set
- Integrity of signal flow paths is verified
- Client/server API for the system is provided
- Detailed technical documentation is included
- You can expect quick delivery of your RTS system
SystemFlow Recording Software
All RTS recording systems are supported with Pentek’s SystemFlow Recording Software suite. SystemFlow provides a rich set of features for controlling the data acquisition and recording functionality of these systems and ensures a consistent look and feel for developers across all RTS systems.
SystemFlow’s GUI (graphical user interface) allows the operator to control all programmable hardware function parameters including gating, triggering, data formatting and clock selection on the various A/D, D/A, digital downconverter (DDC), and digital upconverter (DUC) modules.
A file management system supports recording and playback of data files on disk arrays with up to ten terabytes of storage. Configuration profiles for specific hardware settings can be stored and retrieved to streamline setting up recurring measurement scenarios. The RTS 2500 Series uses a File Manager while the RTS 2700 Series uses the NTFS file management system.
The SystemFlow Signal Viewer presents a calibrated time and frequency display of data files after signal acquisition and serves as a monitor of live input signals for a prerecording check.
The SystemFlow API allows developers to configure and customize the subsystem interfaces and operation. Source code is supplied for all client API functions. A welldefined set of plug-ins allows the user to extend server API functions.
