VPX Overview

VPX breaks out from the traditional connector scheme of VMEbus to merge the latest in connector and packaging technology with the latest in bus and serial fabric technology.

VPX combines best-in-class technologies to assure a very long technology cycle similar to that of the original VMEbus solutions. Traditional parallel VMEbus will continue to be supported by VPX through bridging schemes that assure a solid migration pathway.

OpenVPX presents a formal, well-organized system for defining all components in VPX systems. Numerous "profiles" for boards, slots and backplanes that detail specific configurations of channels, interconnections and fabrics are explained in this handbook. Designers can browse through these standardized profiles to find one that satisfies the objectives of each new system. By narrowing the field of configurations, these profiles boost reusability and interoperability among vendors.

VPX 3U

The 3U VPX form factor is compact and extremely well suited for avionics, including UAVs, shipboard and airborne radar and signal intelligence applications. Pentek's families of 3U VPX boards for data acquisition, software radio and digital signal processing offer flexible, high-speed fabric connections. Pentek 3U VPX products include the Model 52xxx and the 53xxx series. The table below provides a comparison of their main features.

VPX 6U

Pentek's 6U VPX boards for data acquisition, software radio and digital signal processing offer flexible, gigabit serial fabric connections for demanding radar, beamforming, communications and signal intelligence applications. The 6U VPX Model 57xxx and Model 58xxx boards accommodate either one (57xxx) or two (58xxx) Cobalt or Onyx FPGA XMCs, significantly increasing the functional density of a VPX slot.
