FPGA Overview

As FPGAs acquired DSP capabilities with hardware multipliers, Pentek was among the first to offer board-level FPGA design kits so customers could easily add their own IP algorithms.

Pushing the envelope of FPGA resources, Pentek announced a series of extremely high-performance FPGA cores for FFT, DDC and pulse compression algorithms and now offer these as factory-installed IP cores on Pentek products.

FPGAs are fully characterized: Pentek provides detailed information on FPGA utilization and recommends exactly which FPGA to use based on how much user-generated IP will be installed.

FPGA development support: Free, lifetime customer support is provided. Nearly all of Pentek's boards use the integral FPGA for moving data and signal processing functions. As a result, Pentek is an expert at developing IP and using the Xilinx development and debugging software tool sets. This helps new customers through the process, saving time and money.

GateXpress® improves & simplifies FPGA loading: Large FPGAs take a long time to configure, so when the system powers up, the FPGA PCIe interface can't be seen by the host. GateXpress copies and stores the configuration information and restores the original configuration information after the FPGA has been reloaded. The host can continue to access the board without the need for a host reset. GateXpress' built-in function set includes PCIe Power-up & Discovery, FPGA Load - JTAG, FLASH, & PCIe & FPGA Dynamic Reconfiguration.


Gateflow GateFlow is Pentek's flagship collection of FPGA Design Resources that utilize the Xilinx Virtex FPGA parts. GateFlow is available in two offerings:

  • GateFlow® FPGA Design Kit: Allows the user to easily modify, replace and extend the standard factory installed functions in the FPGA and add user-generated IP. GateFlow is used with Xilinx ISE Foundation tools and includes a complete ISE project with VHDL source, which significantly shortens the time for end users to develop and install custom IP.
  • Installed IP Cores: Each member of the Cobalt®, Virtex-6 and Onyx®, Virtex-7 FPGA board family is delivered with factory-installed applications ideally matched to the board's analog interfaces. The IP is highly-optimized and eliminates the need for customer FPGA development. The IP includes interface logic (A/D & D/A, memory, serial gigabit interfaces), data routing and packing, data tagging functions, DMA engines, Digital Downconverters (DDCs), interpolators, FFTs, beamforming (channel & multiboard summation, and gain & phase-shift coefficients).

Readyflow ReadyFlow Board Support Packages are designed to reduce development time not only during the initial stages, but any time new hardware is added to the system.

  • Immediate Startup: The ReadyFlow® Board Support Package includes high-level C-callable library functions that are pre-tested & validated. The customer can install and use the board immediately by using the ReadyFlow Command Line Interface & Signal Analyzer to display the data without having to do any programming. This speeds application development time and shortens project start up time. ReadyFlow allows access at lower levels as required and optimizes the embedding and inspection of custom code. The included functional system example provides an excellent starting place for new project code development.

FPGAs have become an increasingly important resource for software radio systems. Programmable logic technology now offers significant advantages for implementing software radio functions such as DDCs (Digital Downconverters). Over the past few years, the functions associated with DDCs have seen a shift from being delivered in ASICs (Application-Specific ICs) to operating as IP (Intellectual Property) in FPGAs.

For many applications, this implementation shift brings advantages that include design flexibility, higher precision processing, higher channel density, lower power, and lower cost per channel. With the advent of each new, higher-performance FPGA family, these benefits continue to increase.

GateXpress The Onyx architecture features GateXpress® FPGA-PCIe Configuration Manager for loading and reloading the FPGA. At power up, GateXpress immediately presents a PCIe target for the host computer to discover, effectively giving the FPGA time to load from FLASH. This is especially important for larger FPGAs where the loading times can exceed the PCIe discovery window, typically 100ms on most PCs.
